What is E-Waste?
Electronic waste, "e-waste" is a waste type that consists of electronic products
that may have been used for data processing, telecommunications, or entertainment
that are now considered obsolete, broken, or irreparable. It has been estimated
by the National Recycling Council that over 650 million computers will be abandoned
in 2007 globally. On average, only 10% of these will be recycled,
the other 90% will be left to release harmful toxins when they are
land filled or incinerated.
Why Recycle?
If not treated properly, e-waste is a major source of toxins. Rapid
technology change, low initial cost and even planned obsolescence have
resulted in a fast growing problem around the globe. A recent study in the
U.S.A. has revealed that e-waste equals a staggering 70 percent of overall toxic waste.
These toxic materials include:
- Lead in the solder that is used, plus lead that is part of the Monitor's CRT shielding
- Lithium in the on-board CMOS battery,
- Mercury in switches and relays,
- Cadmium, chromium, selenium, indium and other trace elements that comprise much
of the electronic integrated devices.
Due to low environmental standards and working conditions, e-waste is being
illegally sent to places such as India, Africa and China for processing.
Uncontrolled burning, disassembly, and disposal are causing major environmental,
health and "occupational safety and health" effects for these countries.
